Pakistan – New Regulations on Technical Standards for Terminal Equipment

Pakistan Enablement of Next-Gen Wi-Fi in 6 GHz Band

Starting January 25, 2021, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) had begun to gradually implement new regulations for the approval of terminal equipment. These regulations were published in the official document entitled “Type Approval Technical Standards Regulations, 2021”. Although the implementation already started early this year, the document was only officially released in September.

According to the PTA, they will acknowledge test reports released within the certification period, provided that the testing laboratories are fully accredited and globally recognized. Furthermore, the PTA has declared the following specific requirements for different types of terminal equipment:

  • Mobile devices that are SIM/IMEI-based should bear a valid Type Allocation Code (TAC) released by the GSM Association.
  • Devices that utilize VHF frequency bands should use only the officially allocated frequency band and may only be sold to companies that have a PTA license.
  • Devices that utilize VHF and UHF frequency bands should use only the officially allocated frequency band and only run on licensed output power.
  • Devices designed for marine use should have the authorization of the Maritime Security Agencies (MSA) of Pakistan.
  • Terminal equipment modules that will be used for the final equipment should be type approved.
  • Terminal equipment that are wireless and radio-based should run within the permitted frequency range on a non-interference basis.

Manufacturers that produce multiple kinds of terminal equipment must secure a separate approval for each product. Type approved products will be issued a unique type approval number and bear the official “Approved by PTA” label.
