Singapore – The Consumer Product Safety Office (CPSO) Reminds Suppliers of Controlled Goods to Comply with CPSO Requirements

IMDA Important Updates on 3G Network Cessation

On August 2, 2023, The CPSO department published a reminder to all suppliers of Controlled Goods to comply with the CPSO’s requirements. The Consumer Product Safety Office (CPSO) protects consumer safety by making sure that goods provided in Singapore meet all applicable safety regulations and are suitable for usage.

Highlights of the notice:
  • 33 categories of household electrical, electronic and gas appliances and accessories must pass safety tests, be registered with the CPSO, and bear the SAFETY Mark in order to be sold in Singapore, according to the Consumer Protection Safety Requirements Regulations (CPSR), which are supervised by the CPSO.
  • Regular market surveillance checks are conducted for Controlled Goods that are sold by physical and e-commerce retailers in Singapore. In response to the growing trend of unregistered controlled goods being sold online, the CPSO has collaborated with major e-commerce platforms to remove 10,000 of these postings during the previous three years.
  • Each year, the CPSO inspects more than 1000 retail locations to look for and halt the sale of any Controlled Goods that are not in compliance.
  • If convicted, suppliers who are found guilty of supplying Controlled Goods that are out-of-date or unregistered face a fine of up to S$10,000, up to two years in jail, or both. For violating the CPSR rules since 2021, the CPSO has issued composition penalties and warnings to more than 2,000 suppliers.
  • The CPSO will keep an eye on the sale of controlled goods through brick-and-mortar establishments and online commerce, and it won’t hold back from pursuing harsher sanctions against persistent violators.

If you are a supplier of Controlled Goods, you must ensure that you meet the CPSR requirements. More information is available on the CPSO website here.
