UAE – TDRA Issues AML Technical Specification for Mobile Phones

ECAS LVE

The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) has announced changes to the technical requirements for mobile phones sold within the country, through TS FS 004, Version 1.0. These alterations aim to enhance emergency response capabilities and ensure the compatibility of devices with local networks. Here’s a summary of the key points:

1. Enhanced Emergency Response Features:

  • Mobile phones must now support Advanced Mobile Location (AML) for emergency calls. This technology enables emergency services to pinpoint the exact location of a caller in need, streamlining response times and potentially saving lives.

2. Pre-loaded UAE Emergency Numbers:

  • To facilitate swift access to emergency services, all mobile phones sold in the UAE must come pre-loaded with local emergency numbers. This ensures that users can quickly reach out for assistance in times of crisis.

3. TDRA Approval Requirement:

  • Every mobile phone entering the UAE market must undergo approval from the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA).

4. Testing for Essential Functionalities:

  • As part of the approval process, mobile phones are tested to ensure they meet the necessary standards for Emergency Broadcast and Advanced Mobile Location functionalities. These tests are crucial in guaranteeing the effectiveness of emergency response systems across different devices.

5. Mandatory Standards Compliance:

  • Compliance with specific standards set by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) and the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is mandatory for all mobile phones sold in the UAE.

Starting from March 2024, it is mandatory for all mobile devices brought into the UAE to adhere to these specified Technical Specifications.
