Pakistan – PTA Enablement of Next-Gen Wi-Fi in 6 GHz Band

On May 16, 2024, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced the allocation of the 6 Gigahertz (GHz) spectrum band for unlicensed operation for Radio Local Area Network (RLAN) in Pakistan. With this significant development, Pakistan has become the 10th country in the Asia Pacific region to embrace the 6 GHz band for Wi-Fi, joining a select group of 60 countries worldwide that have unlocked this spectrum for RLAN services.

Currently, Wi-Fi in Pakistan operates within the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, providing bandwidths of 100 MHz and 150 MHz, respectively. These Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) bands support a multitude of applications, including everyday technologies such as microwave ovens, Bluetooth devices, and cordless phones. The coexistence of these applications with Wi-Fi has led to increased congestion and latency issues. The introduction of Wi-Fi 6E in the 6 GHz band is set to mitigate these challenges, offering a more seamless and efficient connectivity experience.
