The Ministry of Information and Communications in Vietnam has issued a Draft Circular amending and supplementing a number of articles of Circular No. 08/2021/TT-BTTTT dated October 14, 2021. Vietnam is set to enhance its wireless infrastructure by opening the 6 GHz band for Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7, addressing the growing demand for faster internet. Currently, Wi-Fi operates in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, but as more devices connect, these frequencies are becoming congested. The new regulations will allow devices to tap into the 6 GHz band, improving speeds and reliability, especially in crowded environments.
Vietnam’s Plan to Open the 6 GHz Band
The Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) has drafted a new Circular to amend the current regulations governing the use of radio frequencies. Currently, Vietnam’s regulations only allow Wi-Fi operations in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. While many devices capable of using the 6 GHz band are already on the market, users must disable this functionality in compliance with existing laws.
The draft amendment proposes the addition of the 5925 – 6425 MHz frequency band for wireless local area networks (WLAN/RLAN). This move will enable devices like smartphones, laptops, and IoT devices to fully utilize the benefits of Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7.
Vietnam’s decision to open the 6 GHz band is a game-changer for wireless internet connectivity. By allowing Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 devices to operate in this new frequency, the country is poised to meet the growing demand for high-speed, reliable internet. This move will support the country’s digital transformation, benefiting both businesses and consumers.
