As a follow up to our October post, The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has unveiled the tentative agenda for its upcoming Open Commission Meeting, scheduled for December 11, 2024. Among the key items is a proposal to expand unlicensed use in the 6 GHz frequency band, focusing specifically on enabling Very-Low Power (VLP) devices to operate in this spectrum.
This initiative is part of the FCC’s broader strategy to support technological innovation and address the growing demand for wireless connectivity. The 6 GHz band has become a critical resource for next-generation technologies, including Wi-Fi 6E and future Wi-Fi 7 networks, offering faster speeds, lower latency, and increased capacity.
Enabling Very-Low Power Devices
The FCC’s proposed rule changes aim to unlock new opportunities for VLP devices, such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), wearable technologies, and Internet of Things (IoT) applications. These devices require robust, high-capacity wireless connections but often operate at lower power levels to conserve energy and minimize interference with other users in the band.
By permitting VLP devices to access the 6 GHz spectrum, the FCC seeks to enhance the performance of emerging applications while maintaining the integrity of existing licensed services, such as public safety communications, microwave links, and utility operations, which currently use the band.
Safeguarding Incumbent Services
The FCC has emphasized that the expansion will prioritize protecting incumbent users in the 6 GHz band. This includes implementing technical rules to minimize interference, such as power limits, spectrum-sharing protocols, and geographic usage restrictions. The proposal builds on extensive technical studies and input from stakeholders across industries.
Driving Innovation and Connectivity
The expansion of unlicensed use in the 6 GHz band is expected to spur innovation across multiple sectors. With more spectrum available for VLP devices, developers and manufacturers will have greater flexibility to create new, cutting-edge technologies that enhance consumer experiences and drive economic growth.
Stakeholders and the public are encouraged to participate in the rulemaking process. The FCC’s decision on this agenda item will be closely watched, as it represents a significant step toward future-proofing the nation’s wireless infrastructure.
