Saudi Arabia Adopts USB Type-C as Unified Charging Port to Enhance User Experience and Sustainability

The Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) and the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) have announced a groundbreaking move to standardize charging ports for mobile phones and electronic devices in the Saudi market. Beginning 1 January 2025, the first mandatory phase of this initiative will require USB Type-C as the universal charging standard.

This decision is driven by the need to improve the consumer experience, reduce costs, and enhance the quality of technology products in the Kingdom. By adopting a unified charging port, CST and SASO aim to ensure high-quality charging and efficient data transfer while addressing environmental concerns through the reduction of electronic waste.

Key Benefits of the Initiative

  1. Enhanced User Experience
A single charging port for various devices simplifies usage for consumers, eliminating the need for multiple chargers and cables.

2. Cost Savings

  1. Consumers in Saudi Arabia are expected to save over 170 million SAR annually by reducing their reliance on proprietary chargers and cables.

  2. Environmental Sustainability
The initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia’s sustainability goals, aiming to cut electronic waste by approximately 15 tons per year. Local consumption of charging ports will drop by over 2.2 million units annually, significantly reducing environmental impact.

  3. Support for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
This decision aligns with the Kingdom’s broader goals of promoting sustainable technological development and reducing resource consumption.

Implementation Phases

  • Phase 1 (Effective 1 January 2025):
This phase includes mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, e-readers, video game consoles, headphones, speakers, keyboards, computer mice, portable navigation systems, and wireless routers.

  • Phase 2 (Effective 1 April 2026):
Laptops will be included, further expanding the scope of this initiative.

CST and SASO‘s directive, first announced on 6 August 2023, mandates that companies and suppliers comply with the technical and administrative requirements of adopting USB Type-C as the standard. This move marks a significant milestone in the Kingdom’s pursuit of a more sustainable and user-friendly tech ecosystem, setting an example for global markets.

By embracing innovation and sustainability, Saudi Arabia is paving the way for a future where technology seamlessly integrates with environmental and economic goals.
