Eswatini ESCCOM Plans to Phase Out 2G and 3G Networks

The Eswatini Communications Commission (ESCCOM) has unveiled General Notice 12/2024, a strategic proposal aimed at retiring the country’s legacy 2G and 3G mobile telecommunications networks. This transformative step marks a significant push towards embracing next-generation technologies to enhance connectivity, improve efficiency, and support the growing demands of modern digital infrastructure.

Under the proposal, 2G technology is set to be retired by December 31, 2026, while 3G technology will follow by December 31, 2028. As part of this shift, ESCCOM plans to enforce a ban on the importation and type approval of 2G-only and 3G-only devices by December 31, 2024. This proactive measure ensures that the country’s telecom ecosystem transitions seamlessly to advanced 4G and 5G networks, which offer faster speeds, greater capacity, and enhanced reliability.

The decision to phase out older networks reflects global trends in telecom modernization. 2G and 3G technologies, while revolutionary in their time, have become increasingly inefficient and costly to maintain. Retiring these networks will free up valuable spectrum resources, which can then be repurposed to support 4G and 5G expansion. Additionally, this shift aligns with Eswatini’s broader goals of digital transformation, economic growth, and technological advancement.

While the benefits of this move are clear, ESCCOM recognizes the need for inclusive dialogue to address potential challenges. These include ensuring affordable access to 4G and 5G devices, maintaining connectivity for underserved communities, and providing adequate support for businesses and individuals reliant on legacy networks.

To facilitate this transition, ESCCOM has invited stakeholders, including telecom operators, businesses, and the public, to submit their comments on the proposal. The deadline for submissions is December 9, 2024.

This is a critical opportunity for citizens and organizations to voice their perspectives and contribute to shaping Eswatini’s telecom future. By embracing this transition thoughtfully, Eswatini can position itself as a leader in digital innovation and connectivity in Africa.
