India – New TEC Notification: Mandatory Compliance for Telecommunication Equipment

On February 25, 2025, the Ministry of Communications (Department of Telecommunication) through the Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC), issued Notification S.O. 982(E) under the Telecommunications Act, 2023. This mandates standards and conformity assessment requirements for a wide range of telecommunication equipment to align with Mandatory Testing and Certification of Telecom Equipment (MTCTE) measures.

Effective Date

The standards outlined in the notification will become mandatory 180 days from the date of issuance, i.e., August 24, 2025.

What the Notification Covers

From the effective date, no person shall import, sell, distribute, or use the listed telecommunication equipment unless it complies with the essential requirements specified by TEC.

What This Means for Manufacturers & Importers

If you deal in any of the listed equipment, you must ensure:

  • Your products are tested and certified under MTCTE.
  • The required Essential Requirements (ERs) are met.
  • Certification is in place before August 24, 2025 to avoid disruption in sales or imports.

Non-compliance will result in restrictions on the import, sale, and usage of non-certified products in the Indian market.
