Argentina DNRT Publishes QR Code Design and Implementation for Safety Products

On November 7, 2024, Argentina’s Dirección Nacional de Reglamentos Técnicos (DNRT) published Disposición 1/2024, marking a significant step in modernizing safety markings for products. Building on Resolution 237/2024 issued earlier in the year, this new regulation establishes detailed specifications for the General Framework for Conformity Assessment, providing clarity on technical and procedural requirements for product safety and compliance.

What Disposición 1/2024 Covers

The regulation introduces a dual system for safety markings:

  • Traditional Markings: Existing safety labels and symbols can remain as they are, maintaining continuity for products already in circulation or for manufacturers not yet ready to transition.

  • QR Code Option: Manufacturers or local importers may now replace traditional safety markings with a QR code that provides detailed product safety information in a modern, accessible format.

The QR code, designed under the DNRT’s specifications, ensures that essential safety and compliance data are readily available. Users, inspectors, and stakeholders can scan the QR code using a smartphone to access relevant information, such as product certifications, safety instructions, and regulatory compliance details.

 Why QR Codes?

This move reflects Argentina’s effort to embrace digital transformation and improve transparency in safety compliance. QR codes offer several advantages:

  • Accessibility: A simple scan provides instant access to comprehensive safety information, eliminating the need for lengthy physical labels.

  • Space Efficiency: QR codes save space on product packaging, which can be especially beneficial for smaller items.

  • Real-Time Updates: Manufacturers can update safety and compliance information linked to the QR code without changing the physical product, ensuring accuracy and relevance.

Flexibility for Stakeholders

By allowing the choice between traditional markings and QR codes, the DNRT provides flexibility to manufacturers and importers, enabling a smoother transition to digital solutions.

 Implications for Argentina’s Market

The implementation of QR safety markings positions Argentina as a forward-thinking player in global trade. This regulation not only enhances safety but also aligns with international trends toward digitization and sustainability in product labeling, benefiting consumers, regulators, and industry stakeholders alike.
