Australia – ACMA Seeks Stakeholder Feedback on the Future of the Upper 6 GHz Band

ACMA Consultation upper 6GHz

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) is considering significant changes to spectrum management in the upper 6 GHz band (6425–7125 MHz). Following global trends, this spectrum band has been increasingly adopted for radio local area networks (RLANs) and wide-area wireless broadband (WA WBB) services, prompting a pivotal consultation on its future utilization in Australia.

ACMA seeks industry insights on:

  • Potential services and applications suitable for the upper 6 GHz band.
  • The benefits these services could provide to users and businesses.
  • The market demand and potential impact of these proposed services.

Details on Consultation and Participation

The consultation paper details possible planning options and continues discussions on enhancing current RLAN configurations, including the adoption of standard-power devices.

Given the ongoing review, ACMA has imposed Spectrum Embargo 81, which temporarily halts the issuance of new apparatus licenses in this band, emphasizing the importance of strategic planning and community engagement.

Invitation to Contribute

To ensure that the spectrum management strategy reflects the needs of the industry and the public, ACMA invites feedback from all stakeholders; the Consultation can be accessed here.

Feedback is welcomed until 5 pm (AEST) on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.
