On May 30, 2023, the regulatory authority introduced the “Provisional Regulations on Radio Management of Wireless Charging (Power Transmission) Equipment.” These regulations aim to streamline and standardize the use of wireless charging devices in China.
Key points of the regulation include:
- The regulation defines wireless charging devices as devices that employ a magnetic coupling mechanism to enable non-beam near-field power transmission. This technology facilitates the wireless transfer of energy between a power source and a receiving device, eliminating the need for physical connectors or cables.
- The scope of the regulations covers two main categories of wireless charging equipment: mobile and portable wireless charging devices, and wireless charging equipment for electric vehicles (including motorcycles). Each category has specific frequency and power transmission requirements:
- Mobile and Portable Wireless Charging Devices: The allowable frequencies for these devices range from 100 kHz to 148.5 kHz, 6765 kHz to 6795 kHz, and 13553 kHz to 13567 kHz. The rated transmission power should not exceed 80W.
- Wireless Charging Equipment for Electric Vehicles: This category has two frequency bands. The first band operates from 19 kHz to 21 kHz, with a rated transmission power between 22 kW and 120 kW. The second band ranges from 79 kHz to 90 kHz, with a rated transmission power not exceeding 22 kW.
- Compliance Requirements: Product Approval and Technical Indicators Under the new regulations, manufacturers and importers of wireless charging equipment sold and used in China are not required to obtain SRRC (State Radio Regulatory Commission) approval. However, compliance with specific technical indicators, operating frequencies, application scenarios, and other laws, regulations, and national standards is mandatory. Key compliance requirements include:
- Technical Indicators: Manufacturers must ensure that their products meet the designated operating frequencies and application scenarios outlined in the regulations.
- Product Quality: The wireless charging equipment must adhere to relevant quality standards, including electromagnetic radiation and electrical safety guidelines.
- Product Information: Manufacturers should provide comprehensive product information, technical requirements, and usage instructions in the product documentation, including electronic display instructions.
- Dedicated Identification: The regulation emphasizes the need for dedicated identification of wireless charging devices, which is currently under development. This identification will be prominently displayed or marked on the devices in electronic form.
The “Provisional Regulations on Radio Management of Wireless Charging (Power Transmission) Equipment” will be implemented from September 1, 2024. This gives manufacturers, importers, and other stakeholders sufficient time to ensure compliance with the requirements specified in the regulations.
