FCC – Conditional Approval of C3Spectra’s 6 GHz Band Automated Frequency Coordination System

FCC 6 GHz Band

On July 8, 2024, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced the conditional approval of C3Spectra’s automated frequency coordination (AFC) system to manage access to the 6 GHz band spectrum by standard-power unlicensed devices. This conditional approval requires rigorous testing before commercial operation can commence. Additionally, the FCC seeks public comments on Axon Networks’ proposed AFC system. This blog post provides an overview of these announcements and their implications for the 6 GHz band spectrum management.

Background

The 6 GHz Report and Order, adopted on April 23, 2020, opened the 6 GHz band for expanded unlicensed operations. This initiative aimed to enhance connectivity by allowing standard-power and low-power indoor operations in the U-NII-5 (5.925-6.425 GHz) and U-NII-7 (6.525-6.875 GHz) bands. These bands are also utilized by licensed fixed and temporary-fixed point-to-point microwave systems and radio astronomy observations.

Conditional Approval of C3Spectra’s AFC System

C3Spectra has been conditionally approved to operate an AFC system, which will manage spectrum access to prevent harmful interference with existing licensed operations. Before commercial deployment, C3Spectra’s AFC system must successfully complete both lab testing and a public trial.

Key Conditions for Approval:

  1. Compliance with FCC Rules: C3Spectra must adhere to all current and future FCC rules and procedures.
  2. Testing Requirements: The AFC system must undergo lab testing by an accredited testing laboratory and a public trial.
  3. Public Trial: The AFC system will be available on an internet-based test portal for public testing. Users can test the AFC functionality by specifying locations within the United States to receive frequency and power level information.
  4. Reporting: C3Spectra must submit detailed test reports, including lab testing results and a public trial report.

Public Comment on Axon Networks’ AFC Proposal

The FCC is also seeking public comments on Axon Networks’ AFC system proposal. Comments are due by July 29, 2024. This proposal will undergo a similar review and testing process before any conditional approval.

How to Submit Comments:

Public comments on Axon Networks’ AFC proposal can be submitted electronically via the FCC’s Electronic Comment Filing System (ECFS) under ET Docket No. 21-352.

The conditional approval of C3Spectra’s AFC system marks a significant advancement in managing the 6 GHz band spectrum for unlicensed devices. This development promises enhanced connectivity and spectrum efficiency while safeguarding existing licensed operations. The FCC’s call for public comments on Axon Networks’ proposal underscores the importance of stakeholder participation in shaping the future of spectrum management.

Stay tuned for further updates as these AFC systems progress through the testing phases and move closer to full commercial operation.
