Global Review – RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substance)

RoHS

There are a number of RoHS Initiatives found worldwide. The European Directive on the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS), places responsibility onto manufactures of electrical and electronic equipment to demonstrate these devices contain none of 10 banned substances. Therefore, all products must conform to the harmonized standard, demonstrating conformity and due-diligence evidence that a manufacture’s device, offered for sale in the European Union, is safe.

The rise in the production and use of electrical and electronic products, such as mobile phones, computers and kitchen appliance, has prompted other countries to follow the EU’s lead to prevent the risks posed to human and environmental health.  Although the scope of products differs somewhat between each country/region, the following countries have implemented their own version of RoHS:

  • U.S. California
  • China
  • Japan
  • Taiwan
  • Korea
  • Norway
  • India
  • Ukraine
  • Singapore
  • UAE
  • EAEU member states
  • Turkey

Countries soon to have RoHS requirements:

  • Brazil
  • Saudi Arabia
