The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) introduced the Indian Compulsory registration scheme (CRS) in 2013. It covered about 15 electronic and consumer products. Since then the BIS scheme has grown to cover 43 products that require mandatory BIS certification in order to be marketed in India. In-country testing is required for safety, a local representative is needed and certifications are renewed every two years.
