India – WPC Equipment Type Approval Process

The Wireless Planning Coordination (WPC) of India has published a new policy for Equipment Type Approval (ETA) through a Self Declaration Scheme for some categories of wireless equipment. The Memorandum was published on February 26, 2019 WPC equipment type approval and is effective immediately. You can view the Official Memorandum here.

ETA is still required for all radio modules such as transceivers, transmitters, receivers, BT or WiFi chip, etc. entering and being marketed into India. However, if the module is placed in a product and the certification is on the end device then Self Declaration (SDoC) is required.

The following devices are now exempt from ETA and the new SDoC process will be sufficient evidence for clearance by the Customs and Central Excise Authorities:

  • Mobile Phones
  • Laptops
  • Smart Watches
  • Electronic Notepads
  • SRD Devices (including accessories, microphones, speakers, headphones, earphones, printers, scanners, cameras) etc. which operate in license-exempted bands as permitted in India.
