India TEC Issues Addendum on MTCTE Specialized Requirements

On October 29, 2024, the Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC) in India published an important Addendum refining the certification criteria for telecommunications equipment under the Mandatory Testing and Certification of Telecommunication Equipment (MTCTE) framework. This update specifically addresses specialized test requirements and includes Satellite Communication Equipment within its scope.

Details of the Addendum

The Addendum clarifies that Satellite Communication Equipment will follow the certification requirements outlined in Notification No. 6-6/2021-TC/TEC (Pt. II), provided it complies with the operational criteria specified in the notification. This alignment ensures consistency across certification standards, streamlining the approval process for manufacturers and operators of satellite-based telecom systems.

Key Highlights

  1. Inclusion of Satellite Communication Equipment:
The addition of Satellite Communication Equipment under the MTCTE certification framework reflects TEC’s commitment to ensuring robust testing and compliance for a growing segment of telecommunications technology.

  2. Operational Criteria Compliance:
Certification will only be granted if equipment meets the operational standards outlined in the notification. This ensures that performance, safety, and interoperability requirements are maintained across the board.

  3. Specialized Test Requirements:
The Addendum emphasizes the importance of specialized testing tailored to satellite communication systems, ensuring these technologies meet India’s rigorous standards for quality and reliability.

Impact on Stakeholders

For manufacturers and importers of telecommunications equipment, particularly satellite communication systems, this update simplifies the certification process by aligning it with existing frameworks. It also provides clarity on the operational benchmarks that need to be met, reducing ambiguity and fostering greater compliance.

India’s Growing Satellite Connectivity Needs

This move comes as India continues to expand its satellite communication infrastructure to support initiatives such as broadband connectivity in remote areas and advanced communication networks. By bringing satellite equipment into the MTCTE framework, Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC) ensures that these technologies meet global standards while catering to India’s unique regulatory requirements.

Stakeholders should review the Addendum and ensure that their equipment complies with the updated criteria to avoid delays in certification and market access.
