Indonesia has taken a major leap toward digital innovation by officially enabling the use of Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 in the 6 GHz frequency band. This progressive move, led by the Ministry of Communication and Digital in collaboration with the Indonesia Technology Alliance, positions the country as a frontrunner in Southeast Asia’s wireless evolution.
These advancements are set to dramatically improve network capacity, connection speeds, and performance for both businesses and consumers — especially in smart cities, enterprise-grade deployments, and high-density urban environments.
New Regulatory Frameworks for Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7
To support this rollout, the Indonesian government has issued two key regulatory instruments that provide legal and technical clarity on spectrum use and equipment standards:
Ministerial Regulation No. 2 of 2025
This regulation amends the previous Ministerial Regulation No. 2 of 2023, updating the class licensing framework for radio frequency spectrum use — a crucial step in enabling broader access to the 6 GHz band for unlicensed use.
Ministerial Decree No. 12 of 2025
This decree outlines technical standards for telecommunications equipment operating within Radio Local Area Networks (RLANs), including Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7. It sets clear guidelines for spectrum usage, device compatibility, and conformance requirements.
