Japan – Partial Revision of the Radio Equipment Regulations

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) of Japan has proposed a partial revision of the Radio Equipment Regulations. In efforts to support the increased traffic of mobile communications, it is necessary for Japan to improve the efficiency of Wireless LAN (WLAN) connections. In order to accomplish this, MIC amended the technical regulations for WLAN Systems to support IEEE 802.11ax.

This amendment affects wireless LAN (WLAN) systems (2.4/5.2/5.3/5.6GHz band).

The reason for the amendment is as follows:

  • to allow the WLAN system with IEEE 802.11ax support
  • to allow Channel 144 by WLAN system to use
  • to revise the Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS) radar detection mechanism employed in the WLAN system operating in the 5.25-5.35 GHz band.

The notification is expected to be adopted in June and put into force by July 2019.
