Japan’s MIC Launches Public Consultations on Advanced Mobile and Radio Communication Systems

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) of Japan has opened two significant public consultations as part of its ongoing efforts to advance telecommunications and wireless technologies. The consultations, announced on October 26, 2024, invite public and industry feedback on draft reports addressing technical conditions for next-generation mobile communication systems and improvements in radio communication technologies.

Consultation on New Generation Mobile Communication Systems

This consultation focuses on the “Technical conditions for the new generation mobile communication system,” including advancements in fifth-generation mobile communication (5G) technology, specifically RedCap and eRedCap.

RedCap (Reduced Capability) and eRedCap are key enhancements to 5G aimed at optimizing connectivity for devices with lower complexity and power requirements, such as IoT devices. This initiative reflects MIC’s dedication to ensuring Japan remains at the forefront of mobile communication innovation.

The draft report outlines technical conditions that will guide the development and deployment of these advanced systems. Feedback from stakeholders is essential to shaping a robust regulatory framework. The public consultation is open until November 25, 2024 and can be accessed here.

Consultation on Land Radio Communications

The second consultation addresses advancements in radio systems under the Land Radio Communications Committee report. It covers:

  1. Low-Power Radio Systems: Enhancing technical conditions to improve efficiency and reliability.

  2. Wireless LAN Systems: Refining technical standards for high-performance wireless local area networks.

  3. 5 GHz Wireless LAN in Aviation: Establishing technical conditions for the safe and efficient use of 5 GHz wireless LAN systems on aircraft.

These advancements are aimed at optimizing spectrum use, ensuring reliable connectivity, and supporting emerging use cases in various industries. This consultation is open for public comment until November 26, 2024 and can be accessed here.

How to Participate

Both consultations offer stakeholders a valuable opportunity to contribute to the future of Japan’s telecommunications landscape. Public comments can be submitted through MIC’s official channels via the links provided in the announcements.

Shaping the Future of Connectivity

These consultations highlight Japan’s proactive approach to advancing telecommunications and radio communication technologies. Stakeholder engagement will play a critical role in shaping policies that foster innovation, efficiency, and global competitiveness in the sector.
