Malawi – Understanding MACRA’s Type Approval Label Requirements

MACRA type approval

Following up on our July 2024 blog on type approval regulations, the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has introduced new guidelines for type-approved electronic devices, effective as of October 25, 2024. Compliance with these conditions is essential for companies aiming to certify electronic products in Malawi. The regulations outline core compliance points for approved devices and specific labeling guidelines:

  1. Operating Conditions
Devices must operate within assigned frequency bands and avoid interference with other radio services. They should meet radiation exposure limits and be used strictly for the purposes granted in their type approval.
  2. Identification Label Requirements
MACRA mandates a unique identification mark for each type-approved device, which must contain:

    • Authority’s Logo: Incorporating MACRA’s official logo.
    • Model & Approval Number: Each label includes a unique alphanumeric code formatted as “MLW/MACRA/TA/YYYY/XXXX,” representing the approval year and certification number.
  3. Design Specifications
Labels must follow specific design elements, including:

    • Color: The primary color is red (#ED3539), consistent with MACRA branding, along with black-and-white options for high visibility on different surfaces.
    • Font & Dimensions: Labels must use Arial Bold at a designated size and include both colored and black-and-white versions, as needed.

Adhering to these labeling requirements ensures smooth compliance with MACRA and helps avoid delays in the approval process. Companies targeting the Malawi market should prioritize these specifications to maintain regulatory standards.
