Mexico – IFT Publishes New Regulations for Low-Power Radiocommunication Devices

Technical Provision IFT-016-2024

The Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) of Mexico has introduced Technical Provision IFT-016-2024, which sets new technical requirements for low-power radiocommunication devices operating between 30 MHz and 3 GHz. These guidelines regulate devices that utilize radio spectrum frequencies for applications such as digital communication, wireless microphones, hearing assistance technology, and wireless alarms.

Objective of the Regulation

Technical Provision IFT-016-2024 establishes the specifications and testing methods necessary to confirm compliance for low-power radiocommunication devices. As demand for these devices grows, particularly within the Internet of Things (IoT) sector and expanding digital communication networks, this regulation ensures they function safely and without interference.

Applicable Devices

This regulation applies to a variety of low-power radiocommunication devices, including:

  • Wireless microphones
  • Hearing assistance technology
  • Wireless alarms
  • General digital radio broadcasting equipment

Devices that fall within this category operate in specific frequency bands ranging from 30 MHz to 3 GHz. The provision lists specific frequency bands permitted for operation, ensuring that devices meet regulatory requirements while avoiding interference with protected spectrum bands.

IFT-016-2024 applies to devices specifically in the following bands: 30-40.02, 40.02-40.98, 40.98-50, 54-72, 72-73, 76-88, 74.6-74.8, 75.2-75.4, 74-76, 88-108, 143.6-144, 144-148, 148-149.9, 149.9-150.05, 156.7625-156.7875, 156.8125-156.8375, 161.9375-161.9625, 161.9875-162.0125, 174-216, 216-220, 220-225, 312-322, 399.9-400.15, 406.1-430, 430-440, 470-608, 614-698, 698-806, 806-902, 902-928, 928-960, 1427-1518, 1710-1780, 1780-1850, 1850-1920, 1880-1900, 1920-1930, 1930-2000, 2000-2025, 2110-2200, 2290-2300, 2300-2400, 2400-2483.5, 2483.5-2500 and 2500-2690 MHz.

Exemptions

Certain frequencies are excluded from this provision, including:

  • Bands allocated for emergency, safety, and search-and-rescue operations
  • Spectrum protected under Mexico’s National Frequency Allocation Table

Key Technical Requirements

To comply with the new regulation, devices must meet the following specifications:

  • Occupied bandwidth limitations
  • Frequency stability
  • Control of unwanted emissions
  • Operation within defined frequency bands

Additionally, the provision specifies testing procedures to ensure that these devices align with international standards, reducing the risk of harmful interference and enhancing communication reliability.

Implementation Timeline

The regulation will take effect 270 days after its publication in the Official Gazette of the Federation, on November 4, 2025.  Manufacturers and service providers must ensure compliance by this deadline to continue marketing and distributing their products in Mexico.

For companies involved in radiocommunication technology, adherence to these new standards will be essential to maintaining regulatory approval and market access in Mexico.
