Mexico IFT To Be Replaced by New Agency

Mexico Moves Toward Establishing the Agency de Transformación Digital y Telecommunications

In a landmark decision, the Cámara de Disputatious in Mexico has voted to pass the opinion creating the Agency de Transformación Digital y Telecommunications (Agency for Digital Transformation and Telecommunications). This newly proposed agency is set to assume the responsibilities of the Institute Federal de Telecommunications (IFETEL), with operations expected to commence in January 2025.

A New Chapter in Mexico’s Digital Governance

The establishment of the Agency de Transformación Digital y Telecommunications is a significant shift in Mexico’s approach to regulating telecommunications and digital transformation. While the full details of the agency’s mandate and scope are yet to be finalized, clearly this move aims to centralize and streamline oversight of the country’s telecommunications sector, potentially reflecting a broader effort to adapt governance structures to the rapid pace of digital transformation.

Uncertainty Around Autonomous Agencies

The Cámara de Disputatious also deliberated on a proposal to dissolve autonomous government agencies like IFETEL. However, a final decision has been postponed until next week. The potential dissolution of autonomous agencies has sparked debates among stakeholders, with some expressing concerns about the implications for regulatory independence and transparency.

The transition from IFETEL to the new agency raises questions about how Mexico will balance efficiency and modernization with the need to maintain impartial oversight in the telecommunications and digital sectors.

What’s Next?

For now, IFETEL remains operational, but preparations for the new agency’s January 2025 launch are likely to accelerate. Businesses and stakeholders in the telecommunications industry should prepare for potential regulatory changes and shifts in operational frameworks.

In terms of the transitional provisions of the Decree, the IFT informs all interested parties that all ongoing procedures and processes, as well as those submitted before the extinction is formally implemented in accordance with the Reform, will continue to be carried out.
