Mexico – What is NOM-029?

IFETEL Annual Closure Dates

What is the the safety standard NOM-029?  The official Mexican Standard entered into force on April 25, 2018. It applies to external power supplies used to convert AC voltage to a single fixed DC output voltage and with a lower maximum output power or equal to 250 W, as well as those with a switch that allows the user to manually select between different output voltage levels.

The Standard aims to establish:

  • minimum values of energy efficiency in operation
  • maximum limits of electrical power in no-load or empty mode
  • test methods for their evaluation
  • specifications of the minimum information to be marked

If an external power supply is not sold on its own, and is always included in a kit, the power supply will still require the NOM-029 certificate. It is mandatory no matter how it enters the country. Unlike the NOM-001, which isn’t required if the external power supply is only sold in the kit. In this case, the kit requires the NOM-019 for safety, but not an individual certificate for the external power supply.

Exemptions

If the power supply unit:

  • Contains a battery or battery pack physically attached (including those that are removable) to the power supply
  • Has an integrated switch to select the type (or chemistry) of a battery and a light or meter that shows the state of charge of a battery
  • Are intended for special use as part of equipment and apparatus that are not sold directly to the public and whose commercialization is done with business users or institutions that install and operate such equipment directly or in co-responsibility with the supplier company.
  • With an output power of no more than 250 W
