The Instituto Federal de Telecomunicaciones (IFETEL) of Mexico has announced a regulatory update regarding the 64-71 GHz frequency band. In a press release on December 16, 2024, IFETEL declared this spectrum as free spectrum. This change allows users to operate without concessions or prior authorization, unlocking opportunities for innovative applications and advancements in wireless technology.
This change creates new opportunities for various industries but comes with specific regulatory conditions. Devices, equipment, or products operating in the 64-71 GHz band must receive approval in compliance with Title Thirteen of the Federal Telecommunications and Broadcasting Law. They must also meet additional regulatory and administrative requirements.
Importantly, satellites cannot use this frequency band. All devices and radiocommunication systems utilizing this spectrum must adhere to the technical operating conditions detailed in Annex 1 of the Agreement published in the Diario Oficial de la Federación (DOF). These conditions will take effect on December 18, 2024.
Under current IFETEL rules, devices operating in this band must undergo a homologation process. This can be done through Type B or Type C routes and requires a “perito review”, a detailed technical evaluation by certified experts. Stakeholders should note that the regulatory framework is expected to evolve, and IFETEL has committed to sharing updates as more clarity emerges about the approval requirements.
This update demonstrates IFETEL’s commitment to encouraging technological innovation while maintaining regulatory oversight. By classifying the 64-71 GHz frequency band as free spectrum, Mexico strengthens its position as a leader in global telecommunications.
Organizations planning to use this spectrum should review the requirements carefully to ensure compliance and maximize its potential benefits. Stay tuned for further announcements from IFETEL on changes or additional guidance regarding this spectrum.
