The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has recently announced the mandatory registration of IMEI numbers to the Mobile Device Management System (MDMS) starting May 15, 2023. This regulation applies to mobile handsets as well as any other device that supports cellular communication.
Registration Process and Requirements:
Under the new regulation, mobile importers and sellers are required to register their devices after obtaining pre-approval from the NTA. They can only distribute and sell mobiles that have been registered with the authority. The registration process involves submitting the IMEI numbers of the devices to the MDMS. IMEI, or International Mobile Equipment Identity, is a unique identifier that distinguishes each mobile device.
Impact on Type Approval Holders:
Type Approval holders, which include manufacturers and distributors of devices supporting cellular communication, will face additional responsibilities due to this requirement. Every device, such as mobile handsets, GSM devices, GPS navigation systems with cellular support, and others, must have their IMEI numbers registered with the NTA before import. During registration, the number of units declared must match the information provided during the renewal of the type approval certificate. This ensures accurate records and helps prevent unauthorized imports or sales.
