Oman – TRA Issues Directive on International Roaming (SIM/ESIM) for IOT Services

TRA Oman

After conducting a study on the regulatory challenges related to international roaming for IoT devices and consulting with relevant parties in the telecommunications industry, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has issued a directive concerning the use of IoT devices with international roaming SIMs.

The directive aims to regulate international roaming for IoT devices, improve the security of IoT services, and safeguard personal data. It targets licensees who provide IoT services, service providers, vendors, and integration service providers.

According to the directive, IoT devices can be provided with international roaming services by the provider or importer either through local networks or by using a temporary SIM/E-SIM from the licensee in the Sultanate of Oman. However, this is subject to certain obligations. For instance, the use of international roaming SIM cards is limited to a period of 90 days in local networks.

If providers or importers of IoT devices intend to extend international roaming beyond 90 days, they must apply to the authority for an exception and provide justifications for their request. The authority will review and decide on such requests through its website.
