On September 30, 2024, Panama’s Autoridad Nacional de los Servicios Públicos (ASEP) launched a public consultation on proposed changes to the Plan Nacional de Atribución de Frecuencias (PNAF). These updates will enhance mobile, fixed wireless, and private network services through key frequency reassignments.
Proposed Frequency Changes:
- 2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz for IMT: Reserved exclusively for mobile phone services, enhancing 5G networks.
- 3600-3800 MHz for FWA: Allocated for Fixed Wireless Access to improve rural connectivity.
- 2.3 GHz for Private Networks: Designed for private broadband wireless use, benefiting industries.
- Unlicensed Bands: 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, 24 GHz, and 57 GHz allocated for unlicensed use, boosting IoT and Wi-Fi networks.
- 6 GHz for Indoor Unlicensed Use: For high-speed Wi-Fi 6E and future Wi-Fi 7 technologies.
Implications of the Proposed Changes
These modifications to Panama’s frequency allocation are expected to drive the growth of mobile broadband services, support the expansion of fixed wireless networks, and facilitate innovation in private and unlicensed network environments. Businesses, telecom providers, and public institutions stand to benefit from these developments as the demand for data and connectivity continues to rise.
