The Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) has mandated that all third-generation mobile services (IMT-2000) in Qatar must cease by December 31, 2025. This decision, following stakeholder consultations, is part of CRA’s strategy to enhance the nation’s telecommunications services.
Telecom giants Ooredoo Qatar Q.P.S.C. and Vodafone Qatar P.Q.S.C. are required to phase out 3G services by the deadline, optimizing radio spectrum resources to boost 4G/LTE and 5G networks. This move allows providers to focus on expanding advanced networks, supporting Qatar’s telecom growth, and contributing to the local economy.
Additionally, CRA has banned the import of mobile phones that only support 2G and 3G technologies, approving only devices compatible with 4G/VoLTE that meet required standards.
These steps underscore CRA’s commitment to improving consumer experiences with faster data speeds and lower response times, aligning with Qatar’s Third National Development Strategy 2024-2030.
