Saudi Arabia – SASO RoHS Implementation July 4, 2022

CST IoT compliance

Saudi Arabia’s RoHS Regulations restricts six hazardous substances in electronic and electrical equipment (EEEs) and will enter into effect on July 4, 2022. This technical regulation takes a lot of wording from the EU RoHS Directive minus the inclusion of the four restricted phthalates -DEHP, BBP, DBP and DIBP.

EEEs must prove that they do not exceed the restriction levels below:

  • (0.1%) Lead
  • (0.1%) Mercury
  • (0.01%) Cadmium
  • (0.1%) Hexavalent chromium
  • (0.1%) Polybrominated biphenyls
  • (0.1%) Polybrominated biphenyls ethers

SASO has informed the Regulation will be implemented in the following stages:

  • Small Home Electrical Appliances – July 4, 2022
  • Large Home Electrical Appliances – October 2, 2022
  • Telecommunication and Information Technology Equipment – December 31, 2022
  • Lighting Equipment – March 31, 2023
  • Electrical and Electronic Tools and Equipment – June 29, 2023
  • Toys, Entertainment Devices, and Sports Equipment – September 27, 2023
  • Monitoring and Control Tools – December 26, 2023

Products placed on the market before the implementation dates are allowed a grace period and can sell for 365 days. After that time period, they must comply with the Regulation or they will be recalled. It is important to note that the SASO RoHS certification will have a validity period of one year.

The following items are excluded from the scope of the Regulation:

  • medical devices
  • weapons and military equipment
  • aerospace products
  • large-scale stationary industrial tools
  • large-scale fixed installations
