The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has announced an amendment to Annexure B of the Radio Frequency Spectrum Regulations, 2015, which opens up the lower 6 GHz spectrum band for Wi-Fi services. The lower 6 GHz frequency band refers to the range of 5925 – 6425 MHz, as specified in the National Radio Frequency Plan.
Annexure B is a list of radio apparatus that do not require a radio frequency spectrum license. ICASA has incorporated the key lower 6 GHz frequency band for Radio Local Access Networks (RLAN) or Wi-Fi applications, as well as the frequency band of 122-246 GHz for Non-Specific Short-range Applications, through this amendment.
While a radio frequency spectrum license is not required for the use of radio apparatus listed in Annexure B, regulatory requirements such as radio apparatus type-approval by ICASA in accordance with the Electronic Communications Act will still apply. The Authority will collaborate with industry stakeholders to ensure compliance with these regulations, safeguarding the interests of businesses and consumers.
Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and Safety requirements for the relevant Application Type remain mandatory and must adhere to the prescribed standards in the Authority’s Official List of Regulated Standards.
