As Vietnam 4G subscribers grow, the country prepares for 5G deployment. Military-run telecom provider Viettel recently announced that its 4G subscribers reached 10.6 million by the end of March 2018, one year after its official launch of the service. Viettel said the growth rate of 4G subscribers was ten times higher than that of 3G services. Currently, the 4G LTE network covers over 95% of the population and is paving the way for 5G. Unfortunately, Doan Quang Hoan, director of the Radio Frequency Department, states that at this time 4G speed is just not possible.
To address the issue of limitations on 4G and 5G speeds, Vietnam plans to use the 2.6 GHz and 2.3 GHz band, as well as the harmonized frequency plan for the 700 MHz band that has already been adopted by a considerable number of countries in all regions of the world.Read more
Vietnam state management agencies are currently licensing the 850/900 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2,100 MHz bands for mobile phones. The Ministry of Information and Communications is also working to free up the television frequency band for more mobile broadband usage.
Back in April 2018, at the 4G/5G International Conference in Hanoi, Dr. Mohamed Madkour, Vice President of Huawei Global Wireless Network Marketing spoke on “Paving the Way for 5G in Vietnam”, Dr. Madkour highlighted the value that 5G would bring to Vietnam s business and economic growth.
